This morning was the memorial paddle out for local bodysurfing legend Marcio Couto at Posto 5. He passed away last week, suffering a heart attack while he was out in the water doing what he loved most. Marcio was a good friend to me over the past five years. He was almost like family, a brother, to everyone on the beach and out in the water at P5. It didn't matter if you were a bodysurfer, surfer, bodyboarder, or a gringo from the United States. He always had the biggest smile on his face, whether he was out in the water catching waves, on the beach with his wife, or reading from his bible while out for a morning walk. He was the epitome of "Aloha." I'm really going to miss trading waves with him at P5. I'll miss paddling out to the line-up and hearing him yell out in English, "Aloha, Steve Jackson! How are you, my friend?" Well, this morning during the paddle out, I made sure to yell out as loud as I could, "ALOHA, MARCIO!!!" Goodbye, my friend. Mahalo.
