VIDEO: 1982 1st International Morey Boogie Bodyboard Championship

Hawaiian bodyboarder Daniel "The Boogieman" Kaimi was one of our sports first recognizable  stars back in the early 80's. Kaimi had a reputation for charging big waves, pulling into deep pits, and performing creative maneuvers like the "helicopter." He won the 1st International Morey Boogie Bodyboard Championship at Pipeline in 1982 to become recognized as bodyboarding's first World Champion. Daniel Kaimi deep in the belly of a Pipeline beast!   Here's a look at the 1st International Morey Boogie Bodyboard Championship at Pipeline in 1982.  The footage is not of the highest quality, but it will give you a good idea of where competitive bodyboarding was at its beginning.  This event is historically significant because, as the first official "International Championship," this contest crowned bodyboarding's first world champion, Daniel Kaimi. Also, something to make note of in the footage is a very young Mike Stewart. He would finish 3rd in this competition, but his rolls at Pipeline were definitely a sign of things to come as he would go on to win 8 of the first 10 Pipeline world championships.

So, go grab some popcorn, sit back, relax, and enjoy! Until the next time, I'm Steve "Action" Jackson.  I'll see you out in the water...YEEEWWW!!!
