NEWS UPDATE: Annaëlle Challenge Called Off for 2016

  BRITTANY, FRANCE-  Event organizers officially announced on Tuesday, September 20th that the Annaëlle Challenge, an APB world tour specialty event, has been called off for 2016.  The 7th Edition of the event is scheduled to run in 2017.  Here is the press release:

THE 7TH EDITION OF THE Annaëlle Challenge WILL BE IN 2017!!
After each of the 6 editions of the Annaëlle Challenge, our main goal has always been to improve the contest organisation. We had to take a one-year break in 2011 to start a brand new cycle, materialized by being sanctioned officially as a world tour specialty event.
We choose to organize the 7th edition of the Annaëlle Challenge next year only, to keep growing this event. The level of performance from the riders has ...improved so high that we needed to follow that example : logistics, security, prize money, communication, ... We'll do our best to make sure this 7th edition will be the best, while keeping of course our local spirit : cultural exchange, friendliness and independence !

This won't be possible without our supporters and without the crucial help from our partners !

LA 7ème EDITION DU Annaëlle Challenge SERA EN 2017!!!
Après chacune des 6 éditions du Annaëlle Challenge, notre objectif a toujours été de chercher à améliorer l'organisation de la compétition. Nous avions ainsi déjà dû faire une pause en 2011, pour mieux repartir sur un nouveau cycle, qui se concrétisa notamment par notre intégration au sein du tour professionnel mondial.
Nous avons fait le choix d'organiser la 7ème édition du Annaëlle Challenge l'année prochaine seulement, pour nous permettre de continuer à faire grandir l'événement. Le niveau de nos compétiteurs a tellement augmenté au fil des années, que nous nous devons de suivre leur exemple : logistique, sécurité, prize money, communication ... Nous ferons notre maximum pour que cette 7ème édition soit la meilleure, tout en conservant notre esprit breton : échange, convivialité et indépendance !

ALAN MUÑOZ WINS 2016 SINTRA PRO

  PRAIA GRANDE, PORTUGAL-  Chilean Alan Muñoz has won the Men's division at the 2016 APB Sintra Pro (September 13th-18th, 2016). Isabela Sousa (Brasil) was victorious in the Women's Pro. In the Drop Knee Pro, it was Dave Hubbard (Hawaii) once again walking away with 1st Place honors.  A strong performance by Tanner McDaniel paved his way to the top spot on the podium in the Pro Junior division.  For full results, photos, and video highlights please be sure to visit:

DAVE HUBBARD CLINCHES 8TH DROP KNEE WORLD TITLE

  PRAIA GRANDE, PORTUGAL-  With his win at the Sintra Pro, essentially a single event world championship for the Drop Knee division, Hawaiian Dave Hubbard has added yet another title to his long-running resume to become 8x DK World Champion.

  PRAIA GRANDE, PORTUGAL-  Brazilian Isabela Sousa has claimed her fourth Women's World Title in dominant fashion, having won the first three of four scheduled WWT events.  She is now tied with Stephanie Pettersen (Brasil) for second most Women's Professional World Championships (4), behind Neymara Carvalho (Brasil) with 5 titles to her name.

Ok, time for another ACTION packed, Old Skool interview number 6 with Steve Action Jackson .... If you don't know, Steve is a historian on all things bodyboarding, but most people know him from when he commentates on the APB World Pro Tour. Anyway, I'm a big fan of Steve's so I thought we would get him on for an interview. Lets see what he had to say...Lets GO !!!


JB:Name?
SJ: Steve Jackson.

JB: Nickname?
SJ: Action Jackson, but Ozzies like Kingy, BP, Hardballs, etc. always call me Jacko.

JB: Hometown?
SJ: Brielle, New Jersey, USA (east coast).

JB: Current Residence?
SJ: Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

JB: Fav surf break and why?
SJ: My home break Jenks, back in New Jersey, will always be my sentimental favorite.

JB: How did you get into bodyboarding?
SJ: Back in 1988, I was hanging out at the beach with some classmates. One of them had a Turbo XTC (vinyl deck with all the crazy 80's graphics and a hard slick). I borrowed it, paddled out, and after that first wave I was hooked on bodyboarding for life!

JB: How's life living in Brazil compared to home in the USA?
SJ: Life in Rio is definitely a bit of a learning experience after having grown up in a small coastal town on the US east coast. Winter there is pretty quiet, where as Copacabana is a very tourist-heavy destination almost year-round. Sometimes, I miss the mellow small town vibe but I don't miss winter in NJ or running across snow-covered beaches to jump into 3C waters for a surf. I love the more moderate winter temps in Rio, along with the more consistent and more powerful waves here at Posto 5 in Copacabana.


JB: You're a commentator for the APB, which is the world bodyboard tour. How did you get into commentating?
SJ: I started doing commentary, and beach announcing, on a regular basis while working on the USBA national tour. That was back in 2005. I worked commentary for my first world tour event in 2010 in Brazil.

JB: Fav food and alcoholic drink?
SJ: Chicken chimichangas with sides of refried beans, Mexican rice, tortilla chips, salsa, guacemole, and an ice cold Pacifico beer to wash it all down.

JB: What is your other occupation, and tell us about it , besides commentating on the APB?
SJ: I try to pick up whatever side work I can. I work as a bodyboarding instructor. I occasionally work commentary for WSL South America. I'm a contributing writer for Riptide Bodyboarding. I work special events whenever possible. I'll even take the occasional painting job. Basically, whatever brings in a paycheck and allows me to continue to focus on the sport and lifestyle of bodyboarding.


JB: Best bit of advice your mum or dad gave you as a kid?
SJ: My personal favorite piece of advice is something my mom said to me before I started high school. "Don't get arrested, because we won't bail you out." I have never been arrested.

JB: Fav old skool board?
SJ: My first board, a 1988 Morey Mach 7-7. My father bought it for me, and I learned so much about wave riding on that first board.


JB: Fav old skool VHS video?
SJ: The first old school VHS bodyboarding video I ever got hooked on was the 'Kauai Classic: Future of Youth' video from 1990. Kyle Maligro, Harry Antipala, and Chris Tennberg were doing DK airs that are still progressive today!

JB: Dream surf trip and why?
SJ: For as long as I can remember, I have always wanted to go on an Indonesian boat trip. The idea of taking a few weeks to cruise on a boat, chase waves, fish for dinner, and being rocked to sleep by the ocean at night just sounds like the trip of a lifetime. I'll make it happen one of these days!

JB: Who, when you were a grom, did you look up to in bodyboarding?
SJ: Mike Stewart and Jay Reale were my two greatest sources of inspiration. Mike, obviously, because he was the best in the world and Jay Reale because he was the first US east coast pro to really make a name for himself. I wanted to follow in his footsteps.

JB: What type of sled are you currently riding ?
SJ: GT Boards 41.5" Fire Dragon CT

JB: Who do you think has had the biggest influence in bodyboarding and making what it is to date?
SJ: For me, there are three names above all others that have shaped our sport. 9x World Champion Mike Stewart, 6x World Champion Guilherme Tâmega, and 3x World Champion Jeff Hubbard. If there were a Bodyboarding Hall Of Fame, those are the first three that I would vote in. No question in my mind.

JB: What other hobbies or pastimes are you into when you're not studying the history of bodyboarding or bodyboarding an epic break in Brazil?
SJ: I'm a huge fan of music and movies, and I love being able to take time to sit down and write.

JB: Favourite comp heat you've ever witnessed and commentated on?
SJ: Hubb's come from behind win at the 2011 Pipeline Pro. He was in combination situation with five minutes left in the heat, and dropped two scores in the 9 point range to win! Absolutely thrilling to watch!

JB: Who was the first famous bodyboarder you met many years ago that you were stoked to meet? Where was it and what comp?
SJ: When I was 15 (1990), I met Jay Reale and Paul Roach during a Morey promotional signing in Pt. Pleasant, NJ.

JB: Goals for the future in the way of bodyboarding?
SJ: My goals? I want to keep pushing my personal boundaries as a bodyboarder. Out of the water, I want to continue chronicling the history of our sport. With both, I want to keep going until the day I die!

JB: Your best achievement back in the day of competitive bodyboarding?
SJ: 3x ESA Central New Jersey Men's Bodyboarding District Champion.

JB: Have you ever tried vegemite?
SJ: The first time I ever tried vegemite was in Hawaii about five years ago. I forget who it was, but one of the Ozzies had a jar with him. I tried it spread on toast with butter for breakfast...been hooked ever since!

JB: That's awesome, mate! Gotta love the old vegemite. Thanks a million for your time. It was fun to interview you, Steve.

Riptide Bodyboarding Magazine in Australia.

I'm Steve "Action" Jackson, and I am a contributing writer for Riptide Bodyboarding Magazine in Australia.

  From the first time I ever picked up a bodyboarding magazine back home in the United States, I dreamed of one day writing about the sport and lifestyle of bodyboarding.  When I was a grom, there were two magazines I couldn't wait to get my hands on.  As soon as the latest issues of Bodyboarding (US) and Riptide (Australia) hit the shelves at the local surf shop, I was there to snatch up a copy then fly home to freak out over the photos and read the mag from cover to cover!   That same sense of eager anticipation and stoke stayed with me as an adult.  Flipping through the pages, tripping out over the photos of my favorite bodyboarders performing high-performance maneuvers or charging waves of consequence all across the far reaches of our planet and reading their personal accounts of those experience always made me want to 1) go bodyboarding, 2) travel, and 3) be one of those guys writing these stories.

  Over the years, I've had the opportunity to contribute an article, here or there, for one magazine or another. Whenever asked, I would jump on the chance to write press releases for the USBA (United States Bodyboarding Association), IBA (International Bodyboarding Association), and APB (Association of Professional Bodyboarders). I'm always stoked to sit down and write/type out a story.  Well, last year (2015), a life-long dream of mine was realized when I was asked if I'd be interested in being a contributing writer for Riptide.  I jumped at the opportunity!!!  Listed below are links for the online articles I wrote in 2015 and, if you get the chance, try to get your hands on a copy of Issue #204...my first piece for Riptide, the first section in a 3-part article about Brazil, is in there!

TÂMEGA SAVES BODYBOARDER AT PIPELINE

GT along with Jamie O'Brien, Alex Leon, Erik Apple and the Hawaiian lifeguards bringing Dylan McGinn back to life.

  NORTH SHORE, OAHU, HAWAII-  On the eve of the final day of the 2016 APB Mike Stewart Pipeline Invitational, 6x World Champion and North Shore lifeguard Guilherme Tâmega helped rescue bodyboarder Dylan McGinn (New Jersey).  Dylan, the younger brother of former pro bodyboarder Larry McGinn, hit his head on the reef and was knocked unconscious. GT helped pull McGinn from the water with the assistence of Jamie O'Brien (Hawaii), Tahurai Henry (Tahiti), APB Tour CEO Alex Leon (Australia), MMA fighter/bodyboarder Erik Apple (California) and members of the North Shore Lifeguard Association.  CPR and defibrilators were used to revive Dylan before paramedics transported him to a local hospital.  Here's wishing Dylan McGinn a speedy recovery!
